Oh my, your parliament is well hung...

So since I’m going to be living over there for a year come September, I’ve been trying to pay attention to the election over in the UK. It looks like I’m going to be a student in a Torrey government (*sigh*) how very Young Ones. In the weeks leading up to the election though, when I was trying to follow what was happening, I was having a hard time really getting into it. A part of that is that it’s a different country with a system that I don’t really have a working understanding of. Reading an article on the subject I found myself having to go to Wikipedia to figure out what something was (i.e. hung parliament). That’s fine, that’s great I love learning, but my attention span is short and it wouldn’t be long before my interest waned and I surfed on to something else. That’s the other thing their election brought to my attention about my own country, the 2008 election was more about entertainment than policy. I really got into that election that summer, watching MSNBC every day at the gym. It was entertainment! There was the charismatic black guy, the ancient former war hero and a crazy idiot housewife! FUN! Just looking at the homepage of the Guardian when pictures of Cameron, Brown and Clegg were all lined up I looked, white guy, white guy, white guy, I got kinda bored. Then I did a mental facepalm when I realized how 24 hours news has effected my view of politics. It’s not supposed to be entertaining. It’s about policy, not my amusement. Maybe I’m like all other Americans. I want to be informed and feel smart but only to a degree and it’s much easier to sound like I’m paying attention when it’s something entertaining (did you hear when Brown called that lady a bigot?) than when it’s actually about anything complex and multi-facetted. Sigh. Ah well. With the wall street stuff and the BP situation in the gulf it’s obvious that governments aren’t in charge any more anyway, we’re all at the mercy of international corporations. Ugh, see, now I’m just depressed. I’m going to seek out some mindless entertainment....

http://www.fivethirtyeight.com, one of my favorite political blogs because they use a lot of polling data, has had a lot of good info on the UK elections the past few days. You may want to check it out...
