May. 21st, 2007

Saturday night we had a most successful game night. It was the biggest game night to date with a total of 15 peeps, hosted by Raye and I and the food provided was fondue. Back in the day, Cathy used to host some kick-ass fondue parties. For one, this girl really knows how to melt some good cheese, secondly, there was so much food and so much booze, it was always a huge blast. When she told me that she was going to move to Sydney I knew that one thing I would miss, apart from her loveable personality, of course, were those bitchin’ fondue parties. Now, Cathy is back and The Girls have started the new tradition of a monthly Game Night. Well this weekend, the Fondue parties of old met with the Game Night of today and goddamn it was fucking fantastic.

I had the usual hostess paranoia before things began. Of course I was excited for game night and especially excited to have Cathy’s fondue recipe for the first time since ’05. Still, I was worried about cancellations or that people weren’t going to contribute and that Raye and I would have to make a mad dash to Trader Joes and pick up more dip-ables. I was worried how people were going to get along etc. etc. However, my worrying was pointless and the night went on smoothly. People started showing up at around 7:30. all bringing in so much food that Raye and I were running around like chickens with our heads cut off for the first half hour greeting everybody and prepping for the fondue.

There were fifteen people participating that week. Of course there was the usual crew; the Girls (Cathy, Christine Raye and myself) Jordan, Chris, Christian. There were also Samuel and Alex who have both been to at least one other game night. Then, there were some peeps who I’m sure also very fondly remember Cathy’s old fondue parties, Kate and Brent, Malaika and Eric and Derek. Finally Christine invited her friend, Christine. What with the two Christines in the house, our Christine went by the appropriate title of “Princess” for the evening to avoid confusion. :) This made for some good comedy throughout the night.

As I mentioned before, there was so much food. Cathy cooked up a batch of fondue with 3 pounds or gruyere and I think a half pound of havarti. We had broccoli, cauliflower, bread, shrimp, mushrooms (yuck), and potato wedges for the cheese and perhaps more that I can’t recall off hand. I made an improvisational salad bar with choice of green leaf or spinach, feta, peppers, onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, balsamic or ceaser dressing. For desert, Christine and Alex melted the chocolate fondue where there was a wide variety of things for dipping; strawberries, bananas, apples, pears, oranges, shortbread (homemade by Cathy), pound cake, and marshmallows.

We got through three games and I didn’t win a goddamned one of them. The first game was three teams of five. Then after Christian left—despite Christine’s, I mean “Princess’” very forward pleas for him to stay for another game—we had two teams of seven, battle of the sexes. This worked out well as two of the couples had to leave mid game, our numbers were still even on both teams. The third game my team lost but in my defense it was mostly Cathy and I against the other team because we had an exhausted Chris and a very intoxicated Samuel on our team. Whatever.

Favorite moment (a little more than just a quote.)
The Girls and I were out on the deck with the Christian, smoking.
Christian (to Christine): Right, ‘casue you’re “Princess.”
Raye (remarking on crown emblem on the sleve of Christian’s sweater) : Does this mean you’re the king?”
Christian: I guess so.
Cathy (in lustrous mumble): “Who’s your daddy.”
Perhaps you have to have been to game night to understand the hilarity with the Chritine.Christian interaction. Still I laughed my ass off. This is why I love Cathy..and my friends in general.

Thank you so much for those that turned out, contributed with food and drink, helped out in the prep, and got into the game night spirit! I had a blast.
In a slightly related note I’m totally having the most healthy lunch from the left-overs of this game night, broccoli, spinach salad, and a banana for desert. Hooray for game night!

Thank you!!
We had such an awesome time on Sat night! Thanks so much for inviting us. I don't think I'll be humming in front of a group anytime soon (I was a little shy at first, lol!), but at least you guys let me redeem myself with The Sopranos, hahaha!

All the food was amazing, and you guys can throw one good party!

Heh, I have kind of a strong background with music, just didn't know that song very well, and definitely the shy thing going...need liquid courage next time!

Crock pot? We didn't bring one, are you sure it's not Brent and Kates?

I'm pretty sure I'll see you next weekend there!

Re: Thank you!!
Oh Raye told me it was yours. I guess it must be Kate & brent's. Whoops. Doesn't change the fact that I'll bring it over to the BBQ next week. See you there. :)
