Why is it the only part of a song to get stuck in my head is the part that grates on my nerves? Right now I have the lines from Blue Scholars "Inkwell" stuck in my head. Specifically the lines proceeding to the line where they misuse "irony." DOn't get me wrong I like Blue Scholars and I really like that song 'cause it's about my town's music history and all but every time I hear a line a little piece of me dies. Specifically the english major in me.
I cringe when I hear it: "We called ourselves ‘Phase’ and ironically it was"
I mean, I know what they mean but the word sould be "prophetically" not "ironically"
If they called themselves "The Hip Hop Group From Seattle That Shall Last a Lifetime" and it turns out to be short lived, then it would be ironic becasue it would be contrary to what it says/leads one to belive.
Surely if you call yourself "phase" and that turns out to be the case than it's a prophetic title, not ironic.

Just had to rant.

It's still stuck in my head though.

It's "fhase" ;)

It is ironic because he picked this cool name without having the connotation in mind of the "brief period", but the name ends up just being a phase (his understanding of the name changes).

Or I could ask Saba the next time I see him ;)

PS have you heard the remix with modest mouse's "float on" in the background?

No I haven't. I saw it listed though, when I googled Inkwell to find the lyrics to the song though. I can't listen to it on my work computer. no sound. It is good?

Oh I didn't know it had a different spelling. I know that's what he meant, that they didn't think it would be short lived, but that is still, technically, not irony.

No don't ask that wont be necessary. Just an English major OCD moment. :P
